I’ve had a ball this evening and apparently a lot of other folk have, too…and the best bit may be that I have a bed and an en suite bathroom all to myself in the very comfortable and hospitable Cross Inn. We’ve done it! http://www.hebrideanchallenge.com/post/19 Day 4 2007-07-05 The major mountains of Harris await the experienced racer and the unwary Heb-virgin http://www.hebrideanchallenge.com/post/20 Day 3 2007-07-04 First off is a lovely run up the Urgha Beag track... It is a wonderful place, calm, peaceful and with no living soul in sight, save for the birds. The only sound is birdsong and tumbling water, residue from our heavy downpours. http://www.hebrideanchallenge.com/post/21 Day 2 2007-07-03 South Harris looks like the Caribbean, its beaches at their most golden, its seas turquoise in the shallows, its mountains magnificent. http://www.hebrideanchallenge.com/post/22 Day 1 2007-07-02 Ferry leaves at 0715 and I have to holler at some sleepy campers to get into gear. They are stiff and reluctant! Kayakers leave a little late and get the sharp end of Jeff’s usually gentle tongue, too. Late starts, we know if they don’t, have a horrible knock-on effect throughout the day. http://www.hebrideanchallenge.com/post/23 The Prologue 2007-07-01 arrival at Barra, while folk throw tents onto the croft we’ve been lent. Then I set off the bikes and the runners. Those on foot will bag a few hills and belt back –bikes need to zip to a CP on Vatersay and also circumnavigate the island –it’s a great bike road! http://www.hebrideanchallenge.com/post/24 Registration 2007-06-30 We do a brief ‘meet and greet’ and begin the chaos of registration and paying outstanding debts. Kit checks are easy for former ‘Hebites’ but more complex for those who are still sounding-out what they’ve got themselves into! http://www.hebrideanchallenge.com/post/25 Getting Ready! 2007-06-29 All of us tumble hastily the sixty-odd miles down to the Sound of Harris ferry. Meet up with ‘pair’ Colin and Bennie, our only local competitors –happily, raring to go. Rumour has it Bennie has been training on Harris mountains with rocks in his backpack!
